This beautiful mural on the side of Charlotte's Primary Health Care was created by local students working with The MLK - Moving the Lives of Kids - Community Mural Project. Students earned $200 to $1,000 to explore their artistic vision and bring the vivid painting to life.

This is brilliant. Forget New York. Charlotte really is the new up and coming capital of cool in America, isn't it? I'll have to make time to explore on our annual visit next summer.

Thank you kindly!

I'm afraid we're not that cool just yet, but damn if we're not trying. There's pockets of cool. Neat pockets, with hidden folds. But then there's also wide swatches of plain khaki, pocketless and bland. (Charlotte was once named America's Manliest City. Make of that what you will.)

We have lots of tasty food and Obama's favor, and very friendly people. It's not London, or New York, but it has something in common with those cities: People move here in droves and add their spark to the boiling, melting pot of Southern flavor and it all comes out to be a somewhat exciting taste. Also, hipsters.

Thank you for reading and if you do visit Charlotte, let this flaneur know!
